Musa Shey Nfor, CamCCUL’s President is attending a summit in Halifax, Canada on micro credit. By participating for the first time at such a level, CamCCUL sends a strong signal that it is moving forward and along with globalization and conscious of the Millennium Development Goals. According to an announcement by the Economic and Social Council of Cameroon,
released in Yaounde, the President of the Republic and Head of State,
H.E. Paul Biya will be represented in Halifax by Mr Ayang Luc, President
of the Economic and Social Council.
The summit, brings together dignitaries from all over the world including micro credit guru and this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace price, Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director, Grameen Bank, Bangladesh. The summit began on Sunday, November 12, 2006. Experts from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, USA, Tunisia etc will share experiences on various aspects of promoting micro finance for best impact in achieving the Micro credit Summit and Millennium Development Goals of Reducing Extreme Poverty CamCCul, intends, by attending the summit in the presence of major world players in the microcredit sector to continue projecting itself as a serious partner in Cameroon and to start or enhance relations which will be fruitful. expected to lead to new and fruitful relations.
CamCCUL and its affiliates from all over Cameroon celebrated Credit Union Day in style on the legendary 20th May Boulevard. A first of its kind and a sign that Government gives it a truly national dimension as a partner in poverty alleviation. The Celebration of Credit Union day was presided on the National Day Boulevard by a representative of the Prime Minister and Head Government and a Cabinet Minister. The President of CamCCUL recalled during the ceremony that the Nobel peace price this year was won by the micro finance sector, through Professor of Economics Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh. He appealed to Government to review the taxation policy, pay back the money owed Credit unions following
CamCCUL, CamCCUL has been enhancing its cooperation with the Governement of Cameroon which supports the micro finance sector to enhance its involvement in governments priority action for poverty alleviation. On Wednesday October 4 2006, the BOD of CamCCul led by its President Musa Shey Nfor and the General Manager Tatang Enmmauel Ngu paid a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister and Head of Government of Cameroon, H.E Ephraim Inoni. The meeting took place at Star Building, the Premier’s Office. During the meeting, CamCCul officials raised the issue of outstanding debt owed it when Credit Agricole bank was liquidated. Other issues centred around taxation considering that CamCCUl is a category 1 micro finance Institution according to COBAC classification. The Prime Minister reiterated Government’s interest in poverty alleviation and the role that Micro Finance Institutions play in enhancing this objective. He also underscored Government’s interest in the micro-finance sector and the involvement of CamCCUL and its network of cooperative credit unions which controls 75 % of the sector in Cameroon. He promised the CamCCUL delegation he would contact relevant administrative authorities to seek appropriate solutions to the problems they raised |
